Bruxism & Teeth Grinding Treatment
We don't just give you a nightguard. We investigate why you are grinding in the first place.
Why Do I Grind My Teeth?
For decades, dentistry viewed teeth grinding (bruxism) merely as a stress response or a bad habit. We now understand it is often much more complex. In many cases, sleep bruxism is a subconscious survival mechanism. When the airway narrows or collapses during sleep, the brain senses a drop in oxygen. In response, it signals the jaw muscles to clench and thrust the lower jaw forward to physically open the airway.
Treating bruxism by simply placing a hard piece of plastic (a nightguard) over the teeth might protect the enamel, but it does not stop the grinding, and in some cases, it can actually push the jaw back and worsen the airway restriction.
The Consequences of Untreated Bruxism
- Severe Tooth Wear: Flattened, chipped, or shortened teeth that age your smile prematurely.
- Gum Recession & Abfractions: The intense flexing forces cause the enamel to chip away near the gumline.
- TMJ Dysfunction: Chronic pain, clicking, or locking of the jaw joint.
- Headaches & Migraines: Tension headaches, particularly upon waking in the morning.
- Failed Restorations: Repeatedly breaking fillings, crowns, or implants.
Our Diagnostic-First Approach
At ASURA Longevity Dentistry, we perform a comprehensive evaluation to determine the root cause of your bruxism. This includes:
- Airway Screening: Assessing palate width, tongue posture, and signs of sleep-disordered breathing.
- 4D Jaw Tracking: Using advanced Modjaw technology to see exactly how your jaw functions and where interferences occur.
- Bite Deprogramming: Using a Kois deprogrammer to relax the muscles and find your true, comfortable jaw position.
