If you have been researching adult palatal expansion, you will have come across the terms MARPE, MSE and FME. They are often used interchangeably online, which causes understandable confusion. In reality, MARPE is the category of technique, while MSE and FME are two specific appliance designs within that category. This article explains the difference in plain English so you can approach your assessment with confidence.
What Is It?
MARPE stands for Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion. It describes any expander that uses temporary anchorage devices (TADs) placed into the palate to deliver expansion force directly through the bone rather than through the teeth. Within that category, MSE (Maxillary Skeletal Expander) is a well-known stock design developed by Dr Won Moon. FME (Facegenics Midface Expander) is a newer, patented proprietary device developed by Facegenics. At ASURA we also use fully customised, CBCT-planned MARPE appliances built around your individual anatomy.
Why Does It Matter?
Choosing an expander is not like choosing a consumer brand. The appliance that suits you best depends on your palatal anatomy, bone density, suture maturity and the amount of expansion required. A clinician who only offers one stock design may be limited by that appliance; a clinician who can customise the appliance or select between designs can match the hardware to your anatomy rather than the other way round.
Diagnosis & Assessment
